When my family was looking for a place to live in South Dallas, we discovered this little town called Duncanville in which there was this remarkable playground called Kidsville. I later learned that Kidsville had been imagined, designed, funded, and built by volunteer residents of Duncanville in 1989, and that it was all done for the community's children. For two days straight, the people in this community, young and old, worked together in adverse conditions to make their shared vision a reality.
It is evident that Duncanville has lost much of that community spirit over the past few decades. The community is disconnected, there seems to be a great deal of general apathy and distrust, there is a lot of dissatisfaction with the city at large and those who represent the residents, there are parts of the city that seem to be gradually wasting away. My desire is to find ways to work with our city and community to reverse these trends, and revive the community spirit in Duncanville.
